The 1-5 players cooperative superheroes card game Sentinels of the Multiverse returns with a new, "Definitive" edition. The complete line will consist of 6 boxes, and the Kickstarter campaign that launches later today, March 30, is for the core game box. Greater Than Games is planning to release the rest of the series in annual installments (one box per year).
In Sentinels of the Multiverse, villains are breaking havoc in the metropolis (or other location), and a team of superheroes join their forces to defeat them. Every hero has a unique deck of cards that they draw from on their turn, and you will need to play with at least 3 heroes. After you set up the villain deck, you also choose an environment. The villain goes first, and plays a card from their own deck: if it is a one-shot event, it takes effect immediately; if it is ongoing, it stays in play.
On a hero's turn, you draw a hand of 5 cards from the hero's deck, and play a card. Again, this can be either one-shot or ongoing. Then, you can use a hero's special power. If a hero takes too much damage, their card is turned over, and they continue to play with limited powers. After the heroes, it is the environment's turn. You draw a card and resolve it. You win the game if you defeat the villain, and lose if all heroes run out of health.
The Definitive edition has all-new artwork, it has replaced some of the text on the cards with keywords, characters have been balanced better, variants are included, and it is now possible to play the game as a campaign. The core set comes with 12 heroes, 6 villains, 6 environments, 12 event cards, and 12 variant cards-one per hero.
