Favro Games has just announced that they were working on a sequel for Spire's End. According to the publisher, it will be much lighter in tone, warmth and colorful while the previous title was rather grim and dark.
From the sneak peek at the cards, the game mechanics seem to get lighter as well, with long dice-based fights now out of the way, leaning therefore a bit more towards a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure book style (to which the first title was already very close!).
For now, the game is planned to offer four chapters, each featuring about a hundred poker-size cards to go through.

The game seems really light, and I am not fond of CYOA. The previous Spire's End was enjoyable, but not great, and for a narrative-driven game, it failed to provide a story I was engaged in (as a result I have stopped at the end of Chapter 4 (out of 6) and dropped the game for a while). And the dice-based fighting was a bit cumbersome and repetitive (I have always applied the same strategy from the start and it always worked).
That said, I don't quite know why, especially given so few has been revealed, but I feel immensely excited by these news. This has instantly become my #1 KS expectation for the year. The colors, the tone, it just exactly nails what I want in a Fantasy game.
I had a similar moment of going against my preferences this morning. I saw the announcement of Nate Hayden's Rocky Mountain Man and immediately tried to order it. Disregarding the fact that I strongly dislike RPG-style games where all you do is roll against tables. The high shipping cost stopped me on my tracks, but I'm still thinking about it... 🙄
I don't enjoy CYOA games either, so at least I'm safe from Spire's End.
