Backwoods is a 1-4 player cooperative game about surviving in the woods after an ill-fated expedition in 1830. It is live on Kickstarter and the campaign will run for 19 days. You may back either the standard or the deluxe edition, or just the PnP.
In Backwoods, you first select the character(s) you are going to play and set their starting stats. The game gives you 6 points (if you play true solo), that you choose how to distribute among the available character abilities: e.g. 4 points in Combat and 2 in Fitness. You also select one character trait. Your health starts at 10, and if it ever goes down to zero, you lose the game.
Each round is split into: Exploration, Foraging, Crafting/Healing, Event/Battle, Eating/Drinking, and Night. When you Explore, you either move to a new region or do a Scout skill check to first see what you find. In the Foraging phase, you may spend points from your Opportunity tracker to pull tokens from the bag, or add tokens to it. You may also choose to gain Faith, as the forest is cursed and you may have to face supernatural threats. In the Crafting/Healing phase, you may use resources you have collected to craft tools, or do a Heal check.
In the Event/Battle phase, you will draw a card from the Event deck and see what you encounter, e.g. a wild animal. When it attacks you, you get to counter-attack by doing a Combat skill check. You have to eat and drink in the next phase, or else lose health. Finally, in the Night phase, you draw a Night card and resolve it, and also gain hypothermia if you can't keep warm. You win the game in the standard difficulty if you reach the Fort region, and have completed two of the game's objectives.
