Arydia: The Paths We Dare Tread is live

Arydia: The Paths We Dare Tread is a cooperative 1-4 players open world, campaign based, fantasy role playing game, designed by Cody Miller of Xia fame. The game, with pre-painted player and monster minis, is live on Kickstarter and the campaign will run for 28 days. You can pledge for either the base game, or combine it with a Kickstarter exclusive mini expansion for an extra quest, a boss mini and some alternate skills cards.

At the beginning of the game you create one or more characters by choosing a portrait and a path (class). Then you stick the right head on the right body to create your custom mini, and you can go adventuring. While travelling the map, you'll meet non-playing characters to interact with, you'll be able to enter and explore all unique locations and of course unexpected events will happen. You will fight monsters and get class-specific loot.

All progress like levelling up is tracked on multi-layer player boards, that fit in a cardboard sleeve for easy save and set up. Role-playing is encouraged, you can earn special "role-playing" points for acting in character, to later spend to change unfortunate dice rolls.

In Arydia: The Paths We Dare Tread you are an exile, hoping to be pardoned and accepted in your homeland once again. To do so, you'll have to earn enough tokens that are handed out after good deeds. After your adventures, you can reset the game. There is over 40 hours of gameplay included.

I really didn't need anything more to make me not back this game, but something happened that is in my blacklist of "good reasons not to back a game". People were discussing the price (it's not cheap, after all) and the designer sister chimed in on the forum with the following reply:

As Cody’s sister I wanted to throw in my two cents.. This is the absolute lowest Cody could go without forgoing his vision of the game of high quality components, and pre-painted minis. Believe me he wanted to go lower, even though his family and friends were telling him to charge more. He has been working on this for seven years he isn’t going into this KS lig…

You sure have every reason to be mad. KS is not charity and has nothing to do with whether Cody is a hard-working family man (he is posing with his wife and children at the bottom of the KS page to reinforce this sentiment) or not.

As for the pc police on BGG, we've talked about it before. You fell into a trap, my friend.

Could I use the game to "role play" Game of Thrones?

Although I have absolutely no intention to back this game (it's really, really not for me), I played the game of trying to be among the first backers...

I'm backer #4!

Not too bad a score. However, my best score for a 1000+ backers project is #2 for Root: Underworld.

Okay now time to stop having fun and to cancel that pledge.

I don't like games in which things are too much detailed. If a character goes into a house, I don't want to retrieve a map tile that shows the house. Just drawing an event card would be enough for me. When I play board games, I expect a good level of abstraction. This is the key and foremost reason I'm not interested in this game.

Also, painted minis, as Cadet Stimpy rightfully pointed out. Price. Long campaign. Roleplaying elements. Little chests. Too much stuff. Too much narrative (e.g. "You're standing before a small shack. There's a sign painted of a ferry with a man punting." or "Threadbare tents stand here, flaps swaying lightly in the breeze." Bleck. I'm already bored.)…

I may buy this game later, when it hits retail. I don't feel like forking out 165 plus 50, and I'd like to read owners' impressions first.

Let's compare Jaws of the Lion in Miniature Market and The Game Rules (Greek store). 40$ in MM, 45,5 euro in GR...

6 bodies and 12 heads - That's what I'm talkin' about! 😄 Bad-Ass Box Cover Art! That last picture is scaring me a bit. 😬 It's not a Filler Game, is it? 🙂

I don't mind spending the time (I'm retired, so I have shit-loads of it). It's the brain-burning index that spooks me. After years of drug and alcohol abuse, I need to go easy on the brain cells that survived! 🤣
