    Voidfall: A Space 4X Game

    in News and Rumours

    Mindclash is 'introducing' Voidfall as a space 4X game. What's a 4X game?

    It is designed by Nigel Buckle (Imperium: Legends/Classics) and David Turczi (Anachrony) with illustration and graphic design by Ian O'Toole (On Mars).

    4X means eXplore, eXploit, eXpand, eXterminate.

    Then I might be wrong but I understand the four keywords that way:

    eXplore means you don't know the whole map at the beginning, you reveal bit by bit (hex by hex in the old school video game titles).

    eXploit ties to resource management: you can extract resources from the territories you discover/own, can build buildings to improve this extraction, etc.

    eXpand means you can improve your civilization/faction by researching technologies with long-lasting effects.

    eXterminate entails combat. Simple one. A fight-free, peaceful 4X is in fact a 3X.

    Thanks, Z! Isn't that what Europeans used to do? 😄

    Strictly speaking, you eXpand before eXploiting, but yes that's it.

    Alan Emrich came up with the term. He co-designed the video game Master of Orion, but more importantly, founded board game company Victory Point Games.

    If I pimp it out, and with shipping, it'll be $220 (€188/C$279/£162)! 😲 I've never spent anywhere near that on a single game. It's somewhat frightening. Anyone out there takin' the plunge on this one (basic or deluxe)?

    @JW What's a "group pledge"?

    Also keep in mind that a single play is likely 3-4 hours, and that the complexity is going to be really, really high.

    A group pledge is when people arrange together to make a single pledge, so that there is only one shipment of several games and once received at a given address, they then share the games among themselves.

    @Zerbique Well, since I don't have any friends, the Group Pledge is out. 😥 But, I need to be realistic (which I don't do often enough), so, in light of the price and complexity, I'm gonna pass. It was 'love at first sight', though. 😃
