Exploring your Feminine Side (if you're a man - if you can define what a man is, of course)

    in Feeling Chatty

To expand on Z exploring his feminine side (why doesn't he like the "quilting theme" of Patchwork?)...

Z, do you think men can get pregnant (it's one of many Liberal Lunatic beliefs here in the U.S.)? I follow the news a bit, and it appears there's just as much crazy shit goin' on in Europe as there is here. WTF? I'm glad I'm old! The world is gettin' too insane for me - and I'm already a crazy bastard! 😄

Fun story about my "feminine side", when I was in middle school, I was so demonstrative of it (wearing a long braid and a woman's coat) that I regularly got beaten for it. (But it was okay, the people there weren't mean or cruel. Retrospectively, these were good times.)

One of the funniest moment in my life, in these days, occurred when I went to a bakery to buy bread. I got greeted by the bakery patron: "Hello Miss!", who then hurriedly added, a bit embarrassed: "Unless it's Mrs?".

I wasn't outsmarting baboons (and I think I'm very much a baboon myself), I was trying to see that our interests were best aligned. Trying to outsmart those who want to beat you for display of their superiority is dangerous I think, because basically you're trying to undermine their position by pointing out that, cleverness-wise, you are better than them. But the more your question their dominance, the harder they need to punch to establish themselves. So, being silly and saying stupid things is actually helpful and I am actually quite good at that.

As for weirdness, my role model has always been Gollum.

You're good at being silly and saying stupid things? 🤔 It's good to have a wide breadth of skills. 🙂 I see what you're saying about not one-upin' 'em intellectually. If they realized it, as you pointed-out, they'd surely serve you a plate of pain.

Gollum's your role model? How precious! 😄

Do you have to deal with baboons (of a different disposition, perhaps) in Academia?

Academia may be less baboony than your average company office, but yes, people are baboons no matter what. We all belong to Baboonia.

Of course, you don't get beaten during a conference. But you can get explicitly ignored or marginalized. There are basal group reflexes, rejection of whoever doesn't belong to the group, courting for the "dominant" ones (and by dominant I don't mean the most clever/quoted/esteemed or whatever, but the ones who exhale the most power, usually some male power; tall people, people who speak loud, etc., are the ones that get dominant), etc. I am not affected by it in the slightest in my daily work, but conferences are tough in this respect.

These effects strongly depend on the field, and from my limited experience the ranking would be Neuroscience > Linguistics > Physics. Physics is very welcoming in this respect.

I'm not sure what the issue here is, but I don't think humans need to actually carry a baby in their belly to show them plenty of parental love and devoted attention - and this is the thing that matters to me in the end.

And, true, in our societies, it is not that much expected of men to display such parental involvement on a daily basis, and I am getting really tired when doctors only speak to my wife about our son, or when my family doesn't want to help me with childcare because, in this paradigm, since I am a man, it's not my problem, but my wife's, and it's up to her to see that I can work and "bring money back to home".

I really wish I could change this paradigm. I try, by ensuring the conditions for my wife to keep advancing her academic career, by showing my son a man can be just as attentive to a child as a woman, that it is as much his responsibility, so he can do the same in his turn when he'll be a grown-up. Who actually gets pregnant really isn't the point.

The only "issue" is me being annoyed with fools that think men can get pregnant. 😄 I totally agree, Z, that the subsequent "parental love and devoted attention" is way more important than the "delivery vehicle". It's interesting, but kinda sad, that you seem to be viewed as the "bread-winner" and nothing more. When my daughters were quite young, I was the one who spent a great deal of time teaching them to read. They ended-up being way ahead of their peers in reading. Apparently, most of the other parents figured it was the school's job, so when their kids started school (kindergarten), they couldn't read shit. Some of 'em couldn't even count to 10. That's negligent parenting, as far as I'm concerned.

Another example of my involvement - I got them a little shopping cart, so when I took 'em to the grocery store they could help out. At first they could barely reach the conveyor-belt at the cashier's station, but they loved havin' their own cart and stuff. 😎 It wasn't exactly like the one below, but quite similar.

Anyway, I'm glad you wanna step-up beyond just supplying the money, and be involved in Z Jr's development. The world's youngest scientist in the making? 🙂

As a Liberal Lunatic, I wouldn't mind not having posts and pictures like this on our website. But hey, it's the Lounge... Let's have another drink and sing together, Stimpy!

Shock Headed Peters - I Bloodbrother be

Wanna walk through Sodom with a boy on my arm,

Who's so damn pretty I don't know where I am,

When they look so like a girl it's easy to swallow,

And it's one notch on my arm towards a broader tomorrow,

And if the future's looking grim

I can just take hold of him

    And say:

"Nothing out of our loins, sweetie

Will ever see the light of day

So weep in a way and rejoice in another -

We'll never feel the pain of being a mother

We can only be happy to say that we're brothers -

    Blood brothers."

JW, for the record, I don't think all Liberals are lunatics, but those are the ones that make it to the news, so they're the ones I know about. 😄 I'm assuming your media is similar to ours, in that the more extreme, disastrous, corrupt, toxic, divisive, etc., stuff is, the more they dwell on it. 'Course, there is a renewable mountain of that type of news. I actually subscribe to a "nice news" Site that doesn't mention any 'bad' stuff, as everyone one else is covering that in depth. 🙁
